Episode 018: Zolo's Pledge
(Episode 019: The Past of the Three Swords! The Promise Between Zoro and Kuina!)

New characters introduced: Sensei (as a memory), Kuina (as a memory), Johnny

     Dialogue Edit:
In Zoro's dreams (flashbacks), as a little kid he went to challenge a dojo. Dubbed Zoro just wanted to fight, a reason wasn't explained.

Zoro originally said that if he won, he'd take the dojo's signboard, and if he lost, he'd join the dojo. In the dub, Sensei said that he'd accept the challenge, but if Zoro lost, he has to be his student.

Before the first match between Kuina and Zoro, Sensei told them to bow to the Gods, in the dub he told them to bow to the dojo.

     Clip Edit:
The clip of Zoro on the floor with the scattered bamboo swords switched spots with a close up shot of Kuina.

Kuina close up right before Zoro striked again is cut out.

     Digital Edit:
The red streak on Zoro's face was editted out.

The signboard on the Dojo is gone. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
The scene where Kuina was watching Zoro train by the river is cut out.

     Dialogue Edit:
Kuina's 2000 wins and 0 losses were not mentioned.

     Clip Edit:
When Zoro goes to wash his face, two clips switch places again.

The talk between Sensei and his assistant (?) was altered slightly.

     Dialogue Edit:
Kuina originally heard her father say that he won't let Kuina inherit the dojo because a swordswoman could never beat a swordsman. In the dub, Kuina just heard her father say that Zoro will get strong enough to win against Kuina. The way the dub puts it, Sensei sounds like a real sexist ;_;

Kuina opens the doors to take out Wadou Ichimonji, the name of her katana. In the dub, Kuina calls it "Courage and Conviction".

     Clip Edit:
The first clip of the owl is cut out.

Zolo begins his attack earlier than Zoro.

     Dialogue Edit:
Dubbed Kuina tells Zolo that real swords must be heavier.. originally Kuina told him that he probably lacked the stamina to hold two swords.

Kuina said that she's the one that can't accept the fate of a swordswoman, in the dub she sort of repeats what she heard from Sensei.

     Clip Edit:
The third clip of the owl is cut out.

The scene where Kuina told Zoro that.. she was started to mature as a woman is removed.

The fourth clip of the owl (now sleeping) is cut out.. guess 4Kids don't like owls o.o

The next day, the clip showed before we see Kuina fighting with an adult was changed.

A few seconds of the beginning of Zoro's intense training is cut out.

     Dialogue Edit:
Kuina's 2001st win was not mentioned.

An edit that shall change Zoro's dubbed storyline forever. As Zoro continued training, three students showed up. Originally, Kuina died.. (Zoro learns from the adults that she lost her footing on the stairs while looking for her katana's whetstone).. but in the dub, they tell him that Kuina's in the hospital because a guy she beat was embarassed and got all his buddies to help him beat Kuina up. Will Tashigi become the next Kuina in the dubbed?

     Clip Edit:
Kuina's funeral is removed.

Zoro looking in the empty dojo is taken out.

     Dialogue Edit:
When Sensei found Zolo, he told him to follow him, which was originally silent.

     Clip Edit:
While Sensei was privately speaking with Zolo, there were two flashbacks (with those white cloudy things on the edges). This didn't happen in the original. While watching this part in the dub, I didn't feel quite as emotional as I did with the original.. maybe it's the audio and the words.

     Dialogue Edit:
In the dub, Kuina was injured so much she can never fight again (would be strange to use that idea because we'll.. never see Kuina again except for flashbacks, unless they use Tashigi in the dub).

     Clip Edit:
The scene where Zoro was giving his condolences in front of Kuina's gravestone is removed because remember kids, she's alive but really injured.. [Sub]

     Digital Edit:
The kanji on the gravestones behind Zoro are erased. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Before leaving, Zoro bowed to his Sensei, but this is cut out.

     Digital Edit:
"WB" on Nami's shirt is still gone.
