Episode 038: The Comeback Kid
(Episode 040: Proud, Tall Warriors! Dramatic Battle of Sanji and Usopp! and
Episode 041: Luffy's Best! Nami's Courage and the Straw Hat and
Episode 042: Bursting Out! Merman Arlong. Fearsome Attack from the Sea!)

New characters introduced: None

And now we continue the dreadful.. merging. It's not over yet. All right, so, when we left off, we were only half way through episode 40 after Sanji tells Zoro about Luffy's condition. Dub episode 38 begins right after, with a shot of Arlong. Now it begins.. *sweatdrop*

     Clip Edit:
A frontal shot of Nojiko smiling, as she begins to tell Genzo that the battle has rekindled her hopes again, is cut out.

Right after a shot of Sanji, Zoro, and then Arlong (happens a few seconds after the first edit), we go and check out what Usopp-sama's doing! Unfortunately.. something goes wrong o_o;

Original: Ah! It looks like Chew killed Usopp off since he's lying in a pile of what appears to be blood. [Sub] So Chew leaves and walks away. Usopp thinks to himself, and is glad that he made his Kectchup Boshi (Ketchup Star) for this sort of situation. He sits up and plans to lie to the crew when he gets back (Usopp starts to rub himself with dirt to make it look like he made an effort against a fishman [Sub]). But then.. he starts to remember the past events and how everyone's fighting, then he thinks about Kaya and the Usopp Kaizoku-dan. He cries.. then summons up all his courage to turn around.. to yell at Chew ^_^

Dub: A repeat of one of the running scenes.. probably from last episode. Usopp runs and runs until he believes that he probably made Chew tired already. Now it's time to attack! he says. Oh, look, we're already at the point where Usopp yells at Chew in the original ^_^

In the original after Usopp yells, Chew stops (taken out). His startling look when Chew stopped and Chew turning around to look at Usopp are not in the dub.

After Usopp points at Chew, Chew sorta slowly turns around. This is replaced with a shot of Chew running towards Usopp. This running shot originally came in a little later.

     Dialogue/Clip Edit:
As Usopp takes out his slingshot, he mentions to himself that he left everything behind in Syrup Village. Tranquility.. safety.. everyone's fighting hardships everyday and laugh like they're having fun. This is all removed.

Each time they showed Chew walking towards Usopp, a shot of the Straw Hats laughing used to be included, but was replaced with running shots of Chew.

Right after seeing Chew walk after the cut out shot of the Straw Hats, Usopp says that he wants to be able to laugh with them, and readies his slingshot. There's a lot more to Usopp's speech and it's not in the dub at all. Neither are the shots I mentioned.

     Clip Edit:
The actual shot showing Chew's blow to Usopp is cut out.

Chew kicking Usopp while he's down is cut out as well.

     Name Change:
Usopp Hammer doesn't have a name in the dub!

Usopp Wagomu (Usopp Rubberband) is changed to "The Rubberband of DOOM!"

     Dialogue/Name Edit:
The bottle of wine that was thrown at Chew was Usopp's key to victory. Unfortunately it was made into fizzy soda.

     Dialogue Edit:
More of Usopp's manly speeches are gone. In the dub Usopp says that he played the rubberband trick, and the fizzy soda trick.. what to do now?

     Name Change:
Chew's Mizu Taihou (Water Cannon) didn't have a name in the dub, because the actual thing is cut out.. related to the next wonderful edit we have here. [Sub]

     Clip Edit:
After Chew straightens up, he originally uses his Mizu Taihou to blast a whole bunch of trees near Usopp. The scenes from after Chew straightening up until Chew asking himself why he has to fight someone like Usopp is gone. That is, Usopp turning and looking at all the destroyed trees and Chew looking at Usopp who has shown himself.

     Name Change:
Chew's Hyappatsu Mizu Deppou (100-Shot Water Gun) is changed to Spitfire Soaker.

     Clip/Dialogue Edit:
During Chew's Hyappatsu, the rest of Usopp's speech is not there [Sub]. I won't go into much detail.. also, the camera shot looking down-left to Usopp as he hides behind the tree is cut out.

     Digital Edit:
"Wine is flammable!" Usopp originally shouts [Sub], and then fires the Hissatsu Kaen Boshi (Sure-kill Flame Star) at Chew. No, the bottle of sake that Usopp threw earlier is a fizzy soda now so he can't be saying that it's flammable. Dubbed Usopp sends a Hot Salsa Star ("Go Hot Salsa Star!!") towards Chew instead.

     Color Edit:
Yes, Chew got away with being lit on fire, but I don't know if the color of the flames changed or not. Must be my imagination. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Usopp slowly creeps up to look at Chew after hammering him into the water. End of Dubbed Usopp's fight here! In the original, Chew gets up, Usopp gets freaked out, and starts Usopp Hammering him like 10 times (including an Usopp Wagomu!). Then he falls backwards catching his breath, and yells "I can do it! Don't look down on me, dammit!"

All right! Back to Arlong Park. Well, they repeated the shot that had the camera moving down to the hole on the side of Arlong Park with the dust cloud coming out from it. Even before that though, the entire scene involving Genzo, Nojiko, and Luffy are gone. All right, so after seeing the repeated shot, we then see a close up of Arlong's face, and then he holds up a handful of water. In the original, Nojiko continues to try and revive Luffy while Genzo is out of the water, holding up Luffy's head. Genzo, in his thoughts, said that Luffy has to come back soon, because of his nakama.. then we see Sanji and Zoro down. A backshot of Arlong after that is gone, as well as the shot of the villagers, and lastly the shots of Sanji and Zoro before the close up of Arlong's face.

After Sanji gets hit one more time, a couple of scenes are taken out. First, is a side view of Doctor, who turns to his side and notices that Nami's here! Then right after, a shot of Sanji while he's down. The dub continues on with the next close up of Arlong after Sanji gets hit.

Nami looks up towards Arlong and says, "I'm here to kill you." (her sentence is replaced by a flashback.. it was Luffy putting his hat on Nami and walking towards the rest of the crew) To be continued! ... for the original. Only 6 minutes in for dub episode 38 and look at all these edits! Onward to episode 41..

Starting on episode 41, here goes. If you don't want to read this huge piece of nonsense, skip it. Well, right after the title, from the shot of the villagers, then Zoro and Sanji, the scenes involving Arlong talking to Nami about trying to murder him in the past years, the butterfly and the spider scene, to the point where Nami turns to Arlong after getting the villagers to fight with her against Arlong. They all happen after each other so a huge chunk is missing. It's already 7:42 by the time I finished including the episode opening and everything, and in the dub 38, we haven't moved at all. So, I suppose they added an extra semi-laughing Arlong right after the dub flashback, and then right after, instead of saying, "I'm here to kill you", she says, "Get lost, fish-face". Then it's commercial break and then now we start where that long paragraph above ends; Nojiko trying her hardest to bring Luffy back to life.

After Luffy spits a whole load of water out, there is a shot where Sanji "wakes up" and smiles. Right after, he talks to Zoro and Zoro sorta gets up. This is cut out.

Genzo talking to Luffy while he's still coughing up a little bit of water is cut out.

Nami smiling after Zoro tells Sanji, "30 seconds" is cut out. After there are some scene switching.. instead of Sanji jumping in the water, there's a clip from further in episode 41 that has a back shot of Zoro and a front shot of Arlong in the same screen. NOW Sanji jumps into the water.

Arlong looking at the "fountain of water", Arlong getting cut in the face by Zoro, Zoro preparing his swords, a close up of Arlong afterwards (he licks his own blood from his face), these are all taken out.

Nojiko trying to pull Luffy's leg out of the cement block, the back shot of Arlong, the whole pinwheel thing with Luffy and Genzo, then a frontal close up shot of Zoro afterwards, these are cut out. Right after that shot of Zoro, the clip afterwards, which is the same backshot that happened before Sanji jumped into the water originally happens now.

A close up shot of Arlong's face as his eyes widen, Zoro getting ready for an attack with his swords, the entire Tamago Boshi (Egg Star) scene with Usopp (well, even Usopp's whole introduction and all about Chew is taken out), all the stuff before and after, butterfly on the straw hat, Luffy telling Genzo that it's impossible for him to get out himself, Nojiko continuing the pull on his leg underwater, a side shot of Sanji's face while he continues to dive to the bottom, Yosaku and Johnny's comments, and Usopp planning something as he grabs something out of his bag. Then we see Hachi start to move, which is where the dub stars off.. (Usopp hasn't appeared in front of everyone yet)

Usopp shouting at Arlong, Arlong looking at him, Yosaku and Johnny looking at him, well, the entire Usopp Wagomu.. even a frontal view of Zoro as he continues to hang on, everything involving him swiping at Arlong's nose, and Yosaku holding his face, these clips are taken out. The dub continues with the back shots of Yosaku and Johnny as Johnny points at Hachi, who is getting up.

Hachi shielding himself because he thought the rubberband was coming (Usopp still hasn't shown up in the dub yet) is gone, as well as all the Usopp scenes thus far, the continuation of Zoro's defense against Arlong's nose, and a backshot of Zoro where you can see Hachi get mad far away. These scenes and clips are cut out.

Zoro's eyes widening after Hachi dives into the water, a very close up of Arlong, and all the scenes involving Arlong and Zoro [Sub] after stabbing Zoro's wound. Right after, the same side view of Sanji's face as he dives to the bottom is cut out. Dub continues with a backshot of Sanji swimming down.

     Dialogue Edit:
After Nojiko spots Sanji, Sanji points to himself and thinks inside, "Nami-san's Onee-sama, leave the rest to me!". As well as Nojiko thinking, "Merman!" when she spots Hachi behind Sanji, it's just silent in the dub. Dubbed Sanji did get some thought dialogue when he's trying to motion to Nojiko to move away from Luffy.

     Name Change:
In any case, Hachi's Takoyaki Punch (Octopus Ball Punch) is not the same in the dub.

     Clip Edit:
All the scenes involving Arlong and Zoro (where Arlong rips open Zoro's bandages) are all gone, as well as Zoro hinting that Hachi shouldn't be moving or else his wounds would open. In the dub, right after Hachi is spotted underwater and uses his punching move, it immediately goes to the scene where Hachi notices something is wrong and his wound opens again.

     Digital Edit:
Hachi's wounds exploding out is changed a little. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Some more scene switching. In the dub, after Hachi's wounds opened, it went to a frontal view of Sanji after he freed Luffy in the original. Nojiko looking after she shielded herself is taken out and put back in a bit later. Sanji's shocked look at Hachi, and Hachi sinking is cut out. The close up look of Sanji (a pissed off look, this one [Sub]) is put right after Nojiko looks up. That frontal view of Sanji that was supposed to happen after he freed Luffy is out now.

     Dialogue Edit:
Sanji wasn't given dialogue in the dub as he and Nojiko look at the bottom half of Luffy resurfacing to the top.

     Clip Edit:
The rumbly animation clips of Genzo and Luffy's face [Sub] when Luffy's bottom half resurfaces is cut out.

     Interesting Note:
WELL now. Look who decided to show up out of nowhere. After Luffy flies in the air, Usopp raises his arms and falls backwards in happiness. If Usopp's introduction wasn't shown at all, and in the dub we never really knew what happened to Usopp after he won against Chew, then he must be a sneaky-type to show out of nowhere.

     Clip Edit:
Genzo lying down after watching Luffy in the sky, a close up of Arlong's eye, Zoro looking up (he's still in Arlong's hand), and everything related to Luffy's way of switching places with Zoro is gone. In the dub, after Usopp falls over and Nami calls out to Luffy, it immediately goes to Luffy's Gum Gum Bell.

After Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Gatling Gun (And there wasn't any edit for 36 whole seconds! A record in this episode), the screen goes towards Nami, Doctor, and the villagers, then Usopp which are cut out.

Yosaku and Johnny in great shock, yelling about Arlong not having a single scratch after Luffy's barrel of attacks is gone.

Nami's smiling face, Zoro lying face flat somewhere outside of Arlong Park (and he's a sneaky-type too, he's suddenly gone from Arlong's fight), Luffy stretching after his warm-up is cut out. Arlong looking up is placed after Arlong gets himself out of the debris, and the rest of Luffy's stretching afterwards is cut out.

All the scenes shortly after that involved Sanji and Zoro are gone. Sanji's trying to light a match, but his matches are too wet, and Zoro's.. just there lying down outside of Arlong Park.

     Dialogue Edit:
The difference between Mermen and "P-Umans"? It's.. because they stink! And humans smell normal, says Luffy. At least he asked "webs?" at the end but that's about all that's similar in his dialogue.

     Digital Edit:
An edit to Arlong's hand, which is originally around Luffy's throat. [Dub|Sub]

...And because of that, Luffy's body looks incredibly deformed. [Dub|Sub]

One far away shot of that after Arlong bites the column. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Close up of Luffy's face as he smiles is gone and put after a close up of an angry Arlong, which is added here (wasn't in the original). But.. on a side note, NICE! There was no edit for 1 whole minute. But, you know what... it's the end of the original episode 41. And we're only at the 12:31 mark in the dub!

Here we go, yet again. After Luffy smiles at Arlong, a shot of Sanji and Zoro are gone. Sanji commenting about Arlong's teeth and thinking up a scenerio of what would happen to Luffy if he got bitten is gone. Next that are taken out is a zoomed out shot of both Luffy and Arlong as he continues to toss his piece of rubble up and down and Arlong silently laughing before Luffy smashes a block with his fist (smashing the block stayed in both version).

A shot of Nami after Yosaku and Johnny compliments Luffy's statement is gone.

Sanji asking if Luffy can use swords too is gone.

Luffy swinging his other unbroken blade towards Arlong (it broke upon impact, and Arlong bit through the rest of it [Sub]) is taken out.

     Dialogue/Clip Edit:
Luffy getting up before snapping on Arlong about not being able to use blades is out, this is only a couple of seconds. But.. he didn't even say anything similar to "of course I don't know a damn thing about swords, you dumbass!" [Sub]

Zoro tying his bandana to his arm is cut out.

Instead of Luffy saying "I don't know how to navigate" while the camera is focused on Nami, Nami is given thinking dialogue.

There was no shot of Sanji when in the original, Luffy said, "I can't cook". As well, there was no shot of Usopp sorta hiding when in the original, Luffy said, "I can't even lie!"

Luffy exclaims that he knows he needs others to help/save him in order to keep on living, but in the dub, he talks about nothing getting in the way of his dreams, and that when someone tries to break the human spirit, it just grows stronger. And.. "Arlong sees the light!" *-don-* <-- this was real dialogue, you know.

     Clip Edit:
After that, a shot of Sanji with his dialogue, and Zoro with his dialogue; they're both taken out.

     Name Change:
Arlong's Twist Gum doesn't have a name in the dub. He just said, "Let's eat!" (Later on he says, "It's chomp time!")

     Clip Edit:
After Arlong.. believes that he's attacking Luffy rapidly with Twist Gum, a back shot of Yosaku and Johnny is missing.

Sanji in awe and Usopp screaming (or yelping) is cut out.

Arlong, taking his hands away from his victim, reveals that he has been attacking his kinsman all along. Right before revealing, the scene quickly switched to a surprised Arlong. In the original, we see what that merman looks like, crying with a whole bunch of teeth marks on him.

After Usopp wipes his forehead, a shot of Nami is gone, as well as a far away backshot of Luffy with Arlong in front of him.

The clip that had Sanji asking if what Luffy has planned is a special attack is gone.

A backshot of all the villagers, Johnny and Yosaku with their mouths wide open, and Zoro commenting after Luffy revealed his new idea; they're taken out.

Luffy actually biting Arlong back in the shoulder is cut out.

All the scenes around Luffy getting his elbow trapped within Arlong's jaw is cut out [Sub]. This is at least a minute, I'm pretty sure. In the dub after Luffy bites Arlong back offscreen, Arlong encourages him to give him the blow that will finish him off. So, there's a repeat of a punch that Luffy gave him that caused Arlong's teeth to break earlier. Then, all of a sudden, Luffy rolls over (originally happens after Luffy got his arm out of Arlong's jaw) and both of them are down.

A shot of Nami after Arlong gets up and before he rubs his head is gone.

     Dialogue Edit:
Luffy pulls Arlong's fangs out from his side and gets up, but Arlong has disappeared. In the dub as Luffy looks around, he ended the episode with "Let's finish this Arlong!" while in the original, we are already 14 minutes in and he only wonders where Arlong has gone.
