Episode 041: Switched Blades
(Episode 049: Sandai Kitetsu and Yubashiri! Zoro's New Swords, and the Female Sergeant Major) and
Episode 050: Usopp vs Daddy the Father. Showdown at High Noon! and
Episode 051: A Burning Culinary Battle? Sanji vs The Gorgeous Chef)
New characters introduced: Carmen, Leo (Leon), Jose
Dubbed Title Meaning:
Zoro gets new katanas! Yay! Actually, by the time I'm typing this, I have a feeling that there aren't too many changes. I
skimmed through it last night and found that quite a bit of the dialogue is kept in tact. Then again.. you never know.
*Begins the comparisons*
Clip Edit:
In the last episode, it ends before Tashigi and Zoro walk through the streets. A back shot of Tashigi walking (we can't
really see who it is yet though) is gone.
Dialogue Edit:
Hmm, wow, and I thought earlier that most of the dialogue stayed in tact. Tashigi does get angry at Zoro, but she
doesn't spout sentences about the reasons why Zoro doesn't have any money in the dub. She's actually pretty sarcastically
mean to Zolo, kinda scary.. o.o
Clip Edit:
Right after Tashigi and Zoro arrive at the Marines, she tells him about cleaning the floors, but Zoro refuses. Again Tashigi
goes on and feels that Zoro's taking advantage of her kindness. A soldier comes and calls Tashigi to go out for drills.
Nami happens to pass by with a bagful of goods, notices Luffy's bounty papers, and hides herself when she sees Zoro doing
the garbage. Then Zoro begins the actual cleaning of the floors, which is where the dub continues after he and Tashigi
arrive at the Navy.
A shot of the wall before Tashigi and two soldiers come is cut out.
Digital Edit:
A lot of words on the buildings and even a shirt were untouched, but the shop that sells katanas has a blank signboard.
[Dub|Sub]
Clip Edit:
The camera going southeast to view the owner of the shop, before Zoro steps in, is cut out.
Dialogue Edit:
The owner did a good job sticking to the prices he was offering for Zoro's Wadou Ichimonji, 'cept the second last offer,
which was originally 650,000. It was 600,000 in the dub. He also didn't mention that Zoro brought in a Meitou to his shop
in his thoughts.
Name Change:
Tashigi's katana named Shigure doesn't have a name in the dub.
Digital Edit:
While Tashigi speaks to Zoro in the shop, the cross on the shield behind them is erased.
[Dub|Sub]
Name Change:
Dubbed Tashigi takes a look at Zoro's sword and calls Wadou, "The Great One" and names it as one of the 21 Greatest
Swords in the World. In the original, it is seen as one of the 21 Great Achievements of Craftsmanship.
Clip Edit:
The owner panicking, hoping that Tashigi won't tell Zoro about it, is cut out.
Dialogue Edit:
According to Tashigi's book, Wadou Ichimonji is worth over 20,000,000, while in the dub the book tells her that it's worth
over 10,000,000.
Clip Edit:
Tashigi looking serious when she says that the one named Zoro is an evil man is cut out. After that, looking up saddened
with the thought of most swordsmen being pirates and bounty hunters, saying that all of the Meitou belong to them (camera
goes to Zoro looking through the katanas), and then Tashigi holding her Shigure close to her while she's behind Zoro are
cut out.
Dialogue Edit:
Tashigi naming all the different kinds of katanas (21 Great Achievements of Craftsmanship, etc) isn't in the dub.
Clip Edit:
Showed a repeat of the shop sign after Zoro notices something strange with one katana because of commercial break.
Name Change:
The sword that Zolo picked up is something Tashigi recognizes. She flips through her book, and tells him that it's a
Master Sword! (Zelda, anyone?) In the original it's the Sandai Kitetsu. Adding on to that, the Nidai Kitetsu is called Supreme
and the Shodai Kitetsu is called Ultimate. She says "ranked" for Shodai though, so it might not be a name change, just a
ranking for those no-name blades?
Bounty1Berry: I thought they said it was "one of the master swords"... which could be interpreted like "master disc"-- the one you copy to make the one you actually put in service.
Clip Edit:
Tashigi bowing and apologizing after the owner explains the cursed katana is cut out.
After Zoro said that he wants to buy it, Tashigi straightning up after bowing is taken out.
Dialogue Edit:
Well, -I- thought at least that the woman who appears was the owner's wife, not his mother..
Clip Edit:
The other extra camera views of Sandai dropping are cut out.
Digital Edit:
Some guns behind Zoro are erased. [Dub|Sub]
Behind Tashigi, too! [Dub|Sub] (but they're
back in a couple of scenes later.)
Interesting Note:
Uuuooh! Yubashiri keeps its name in the dub.
Digital Edit:
The words on the shop's sign behind Luffy while he gets up from his nap is erased. [Dub|Sub]
Another erasing of a sign behind Buggy and Alvida while they're searching for Luffy. [Dub|Sub]
Clip Edit:
Buggy's crew splitting up to help look is cut out.
A Marine soldier ordering the others to search for Luffy is cut out.
A shot of Tashigi and a soldier while Smoker "scolds" her is cut out.
Luffy jumping towards and camera and running off, and the following two shots of Smoker are cut out. End of episode 49! o.o
Usopp's episode 50 with Daddy the Father didn't air, except for a couple of scenes.
From episode 50, while Zoro admires Sandai, Luffy pops out and talks to him. It's commercial break right before the townspeople
run and point at Daddy the Father.
I'm pretty sure a clip of the town while the camera goes down is added right before we see Sanji walking in the dub, I
think it came from the last episode.
Digital Edit:
Shop sign is erased again. Btw, Sanji walking and turning around to a voice is at the very end of the original episode 50.
Episode 51. The kanji on Carmen's fan is erased. [Dub|Sub]
Clip Edit:
After that, a different shot of Sanji turning around is cut out.
Name Change:
Carmen says that people call her the Woman of Passion, the Burning Carmen, while in the dub she says people call her
Fire Alarm Carmen.
Carmen's first disciple is named León in the original, and Leo in the dub.
Clip Edit:
The townspeople looking around after Carmen's appearance is cut out.
The shots of all the food Carmen made in her flashback and the chefs trying the food and raising the white flag are not in
the dub.
Digital Edit:
The word "Maichyo" on the newspaper is gone. [Dub|Sub]
All English words on the newspaper are gone, and other stuff, see for yourself. [Dub|Sub]
Clip Edit:
The chef on his knees smiling while he talks is taken out.
Digital Edit:
The words on the restaurant/bar's sign are erased. [Dub|Sub]
Audio/Clip Edit:
The insert song (I think you can call it insert?) that plays for a short moment, Mugiwara Boushi no Jolly Roger isn't in the dub,
so that and a shot of the record player is removed.
Color Edit:
Pandaman's in the shot before, couldn't fit him with the glass and the bottle. The contents in the glass are a different
color. Trying to make it look like coke? [Dub|Sub]
Clip Edit:
Buggy drinking the rum is cut out.
Mohji taking another bite of meat is cut out.
Color Edit:
The bottle beside Zoro is changed the same way as the one on Buggy's table.
Digital Edit:
Missing bottle waaay in the back. [Dub|Sub]
Another missing bottle. [Dub|Sub]
Dialogue/Clip Edit:
Mohji telling Buggy that Luffy just walked out, his reaction towards that, and Mohji panicking are taken out.
Hmm, time warp again! At the end of the original episode 51, Luffy's hat is blown away. Separating from Zoro, he chases it,
and when he finds it he's back at the execution platform. Cabaji spots him and reports to Buggy, who leads his crew to
follow him. Meanwhile, the Marines report Luffy to Smoker and he goes. Basically the whole culinary battle is cut out
for now. All of these scenes are put after Zoro and Luffy left the building. This ending of 51 is originally after Sanji has the
culinary battle with Carmen, but the battle is scheduled to happen in the next dub episode.
And thus.. in the end, there were a lot of edits.. *sigh*
