Episode 048: Saving Nami

New characters introduced: Chess, Kuromarimo, Wapol, Dalton, Kureha

     Clip Edit:
The snow begins to fall! This part is used for the title of the dubbed episode, as you can see. Last time it ended off at this point, so things look okay so far. This little part is the ending of 78. On 79, a bit of the beginning is cut off. It's generally the same as the ending of 78, with the three guys staring at the guy on the water, but it was re-animated. After the ending of 78, the dub starts again when the camera does a close up on the guy (Chess).

After the above, Usopp and Luffy looking towards the camera is cut out.

After Usopp and Luffy rub their eyes, a face shot of Chess is inserted instead of a face shot of Zoro.

The side shot of Going Merry and Chess staring at each other is the start point of a few missing staring scenes. Luffy stares, Usopp stares, Chess stares, Zoro stares, more staring.. (the inserted Chess face shot happens about here)

     Clip/Dialogue Edit:
During the above, there is a back shot of Luffy and Usopp when Chess speaks to them for the first time, about how cold it is that day. This is cut out.

     Dialogue Edit:
Usopp and Luffy looked at each other and easily agreed to Chess when he said it was cold. Chess hasn't spoken yet at this point so they talked about other things.

     Clip Edit:
Some time later, after another side shot of Chess and Going Merry, the three guys start giving blank looks before Wapol speaks for the first time. The blank looks are cut out.

Sanji trying to keep Nami's bed down after the ship rocks from the arrival of Wapol's ship is cut out.

A bunch of fish swimming from right to left while Wapol's ship continues to open up is cut out.

     Color Edit:
The return of the pretty green guns. [Dub|Sub]

     Dialogue Edit:
During the above scene though, Wapol speaks and introduces his ship, the Giant Diving Ambush Ship: The Bliking. This wasn't mentioned at all and he didn't have dialogue during this point either.

     Clip Edit:
A quick shot of wapol eating meat on a knife as Sanji opened the doors is cut out.

When Sanji's outside, there's some more munching cut out. These scenes occur consecutively and are cut out. Sanji strikes a match, Wapol continues to eat, Sanji smokes for a bit, the smoke flies off in the air, and Sanji asks a question with his eyes closed.

Wapol popping what's left of his knife into his mouth is cut out.

     Name Change:
Dubbed Wapol tells the crew about his Devil Fruit ability early. It is called the Munch Munch Fruit, and is originally called the Baku Baku Fruit (Baku being an eating sfx).

     Clip/Dialogue Edit:
After the above, the whole crew reacts to what Wapol is doing, eating a knife! They're cut out. Also, Sanji answering Wapol when he asked about them having an Eternal or Log Pose to Drum Kingdom is cut out.

Luffy telling Wapol to get lost after the above is cut out. This is when Wapol decides to take the treasures and their ship. Luffy just didn't have dialogue in the dub at that point.

     Clip/Audio Edit:
Luffy socks the two guys beside him for pointing the guns to him. Other men click their guns (taken out) and then start firing when the camera moves up to Zoro (audio of the gun shots are silent).

     Clip Edit:
After Sanji takes off his scarf, Usopp's crawling over the mast to shield himself from the gunshots, which is taken out.

When Vivi decides to go outside after hearing gunshots (she thought that Sanji was gone for too long in the dub), the first bit of Sanji jumping from the gunshots is cut out.

Sanji hooking his foot around a soldier's neck before he kicks them towards Usopp's direction is cut out.

After Zoro's second attack on a group, the background turns black and all is silent for a few seconds before the entire group of soldiers fly. This part is cut out.

Before Luffy starts to head towards Wapol, Wapol takes yet another bite on Going Merry, which is cut out.

Two or three shots later when Luffy finally reaches Wapol, his soldiers tell them that he's no match for Wapol's Baku Baku Fruit and this part is cut out.

Usopp giving the thumbs up, and Zoro and Sanji smiling when Wapol was blown away is cut out.

The first part of the camera scrolling from left to right on Wapol's followers is cut out. The dub just goes right to Chess and Kuromarimo.

Wapol's men leaves by marching into the hippo's mouth of their ship, and Chess points at them, telling them that they'll be back. Chess is cut out.

     Dialogue Edit:
The "PLEASE.. REMEMBER US.. PLEASE..!!" thing that Kuromarimo shouts out as they leave, which is ridiculously funny, is not present.

     Clip Edit:
When Wapol's ship disappears into the distance, a front view of the Straw Hats is cut out.

Right after the above when the ship is just a mere speck out in the sea; this part is cut out.

A still flashback of Wapol that Vivi thinks about is cut out.

Sort of a digital edit, but not really. After the eyecatch, it says on the black background, "Several days earlier" in the original. Then the camera shows the ocean and moves from right to left, with the words fading out. In the dub the camera was immediately focussed on the ship on the sea without the words "Several days earlier" in Japanese. [Dub|Sub]

     Digital Edit:
The sail on Smoker's ship originally said "SMOKER MARINE" but like always, it's simply changed to "NAVY". [Dub|Sub]

     Dialogue Edit:
Tashigi looks at her new katana by the name of Kashuu (Land of Flowers), which isn't mentioned at all in the dub.

     Clip Edit:
After Smoker calls Tashigi the first time around, there is a close up of Tashigi's face which is cut out. As well, the camera going to the bottom half of Smoker's face as he yells a second time is taken out.

     Name Change:
Instead of being called the Black Wiretap Den Den Mushi, it's called the Dark Transponder Snail. Transport? Responder..

     Dialogue Edit:
Chaser tricked Mr. 11 by saying "syndicate" instead of "society" which proved, I guess that he's associated with Mr. 0. Smoker found orders inside Mr. 11's pocket that were from Mr. 0. Mr. 11 thought he burned them and tried to cover it up, but Smoker said there weren't any in the first place, which made him fess up.. brilliant Smoker. This is how the conversation in the dubbed went..

Chaser: These must be codenames for some secret society.
Mr. 11: Oh come on. That's just silly. There's no secret crime syndicate.
Chaser: I didn't say crime syndicate. I said society.
Mr. 11: (Whoopsie)..

     Clip Edit:
During the talk about Vivi, Tashigi raises her arms as if she didn't know. The part that was cut was her lowering her arms while Smoker continued to talk.

     Digital Edit:
A little digital edit on Smoker's mouth. Reminds me of that double scarred Luffy way back in Loguetown.. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Back to the Straw Hats.. after seeing Going Merry sail a bit, the camera showing the bottom half of Nami's face is cut out. Following that, some more of Going Merry sailing is cut out.

     Dialogue Edit:
Dubbed Luffy wants to tell Nami some jokes to make her laugh, but in the original Luffy still suggested giving her meat.. hmm.

Having failed another time, dubbed Luffy wanted to try impressions. In the original, Luffy wanted to spray cold water on her to lower her fever.

     Clip Edit:
Before Nami wakes up, a shot of the clock on the wall is cut out.

While Nami looks around, a close up shot of Luffy, Zoro and Carue, and Vivi are cut out.

After Usopp startles Nami by talking in his sleep, she looks away, but looks back smiling. The part where she smiles is cut out.

Nami finally goes back to sleep. A series of events are cut out aftwards. Early in the foggy/misty morning, Sanji wakes up after hearing some sounds on the ship (poor Sanji, on "watch" during a cold night!) and finds Usopp repairing the ship! Meanwhile, Zoro goes down to Nami's room only to find Luffy trying something.. he turns around and surprises him with his face that's covered with marker and the kanji for Meat on his forehead. Well, that scared Zoro..

When Nami went back to sleep in the dub, we immediately see the scene that comes after Luffy's next attempt to help Nami out. The ship is sailing on a nice day~

     Digital Edit:
The kanji found around the drawings of the four seasonal islands are erased. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Before Sanji spots something in his binoculars, there is a repeat of Vivi's face from earlier on while she keeps on talking about the weather system in the Grand Line.

     Dialogue Edit:
In the dub, Usopp didn't want to go to the Winter Island because he was too cold.. wanted to find a warmer place. In the original, his "must-not-get-on-this-island" disease kicked up again.

     Digital Edit:
The few letters on Zoro's jacket are erased. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
The second view of the Winter Island is cut out.

When Going Merry gets closer, a side shot of Sanji's head, Usopp and Vivi in the same screen, and Going Merry arriving to the island are cut out.

After Zoro turns his head when people arrived with their guns, a close up of some of the guns is cut out.

The frontal shot of some people (happens before the side shot of the villagers) is cut out.

     Color Edit:
..And yes, all of their guns are green too.

     Clip Edit:
Two more people shouting at the crew before Sanji talks is cut out.

     Audio Edit:
And this edit, mentioned just for my friend, is about the sound the gun made when one of the villagers shot at Sanji but hit Vivi instead. She claims it sounds like a laser, but I guess you can say it's something like that instead of an actual gunshot.

     Clip Edit:
..End of episode 79. And I thought.. er, nevermind.

Since the end of episode 79 is a commercial break on the dub side, usually there is a repeat of a scene after commercial break. There is an inserted shot of the Going Merry surrounded by a bunch of people on the Winter Island. This is before Vivi is seen laying on the floor.

Luffy turning around, the people taking aim, the rest of the crew getting ready for a fight, and Vivi on the deck are all cut out.

     Digital Edit:
A more clear visible of the letter erasing on Zoro's jacket. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
Occuring after the above, Vivi getting down to her knees and bowing is cut out.

Okay, a little switching with scenes that are getting me confused too. Luffy's kind of shocked after hearing Vivi out. Then a shot of one of the villagers yelling earlier on (sort of mentioned earlier) is inserted, and he tells them to "hit the deck". Now insert that missing scene from above of Vivi getting down to her knees, but her bowing isn't there. There are two angles of Vivi as she bows and tells Luffy that he's a failure as a Captain. Those two angles are cut.

Continuing with the above, a drop of blood lands on deck. This is cut out. Luffy looking at Vivi silently is kept in, but a close up of Vivi's injury is cut out.

Carue looking after Nami is cut out, but a screen of Nami afterwards is kept in.

So Luffy turns towards the people and apologizes before he bows with Vivi. This part is cut out.

A backshot of the people looking down towards Going Merry, before the close up of Dalton is cut out.

Two men walking to follow Dalton is cut out.

Luffy has his face right down on the deck, this is before Vivi turns to him and this is taken out.

A frontal shot of some villagers walking through the snow is cut out. As well, Dalton turning towards the camera.

     Name Change:
The Hiking Bear is named Teddy, "The Resident Mountain Man" in the dub.

     Dialogue Edit:
The true story behind the Hiking Bear is that they're not dangerous, but be courteous and bow to them in a mountain-climbing manner. In the dub, Teddy ate their old mountain man.

     Clip Edit:
The camera moving to Usopp, who probably feels pretty dumb after hearing about the true nature of the Hiking Bears is cut out.

     Interesting Note:
When everyone arrives to town, the guns on the back of the villagers are unaltered in color.

     Digital Edit:
They were once green but now they're.. [Dub|Sub]

     Clip Edit:
The villagers discussing between themselves about leaving Dalton with the pirates is cut out.

Dalton beginning to walk after the villagers leave (after Vivi talks to him) is cut out.

The next parts are cut. It's at this point when Usopp calls Luffy to check out another "hiking bear", when in fact it's just a huge lady. They bow and wipe their foreheads as the lady leaves. Another villager calls to Dalton telling him that they'll all be voting for him. Vivi looks around. That's why Dalton waved his hands, gesturing that there's no need to. That's where the dub starts.

     Dialogue Edit:
Related to the above, Dalton said the villagers shouldn't vote because he is a man of many sins, which is why Vivi looked a bit concerned. In the dub, Dalton said that the thing about Kureha is a big story, so they should go inside to talk.

     Clip Edit:
Once everyone's inside, there is a shot of Dalton's wall that has a white tiger skin and two swords. This is cut out.

     Clip/Dialogue Edit:
Dalton introduces himself at this point as the island's Captain of the Guard. Sanji looks around the house. Dalton lowers his bag and wishes to ask a question. These parts are cut out.

     Clip Edit:
Dalton speaks of the place "the witch" resides, so Sanji looks behind him to see the mountains, but instead there's a huge snowman blocking the view. It's Luffy's Hyper Mr. Snowman and Usopp's Snow Monster Shirora! In a moment later, the camera moves from the Drum Rockies to the broken snowart. These parts are cut out.

The camera focussing on the fireplace is cut out.

     Dialogue Edit:
Kureha is said to be near 140 and likes umeboshi. KF's note says they're extremely sour plums and are said to lengthen lifespan. In the dub, Dalton explains that she's over 100 years old and likes prunes.

Dalton explains that Kureha treats the patients and takes whatever she wants as compensation. There is no mention of this in the dub.

     Clip Edit:
A still shot of Sanji listening to Dalton's story is cut out.

After the above, Usopp and Luffy in the same shot, with a big board on the wall behind them (which contains kanji) is cut out.

     Clip/Dialogue Edit:
when Vivi speaks after Dalton talks for quite a while, there is a side shot of him, then it goes to a black and white story of why Kureha is called a witch. As well, the whole group listening while Dalton says that Kureha comes with a strange creature. Usopp goes crazy after hearing that. Dalton explains that Kureha doesn't wish for a close relationship with the villagers so the villagers have to wait for the next day she goes down the mountain. Vivi and Sanji are upset. All of this is cut out. The dub starts when Luffy tries to wake Nami up.

     Clip Edit:
Nami wakes up in the original, but before that happens, a snippit from 81 is used. It's when Kureha opens a door and turns to the camera.
