Episode 055: Defending the Flag
(Episode 087: VS Wapol's Army Corps! The Abilities of the Baku Baku Fruit!)
New characters introduced: None
Clip Edit:
The dub's title is the first thing that appears, while in the original the title shows itself as Luffy runs towards the
camera.
Color Edit:
The flashback used when Sanji appears seem kinda weird.. it seems that in the dub they went back and used the original scenes
(so now you've got full color scenes) and in the original they were kinda lowered in saturation. When they get to the part
where Chess fired an arrow at Luffy, the color of both versions were constant. Strange..
Dialogue Edit:
Not a huge one.. thought it was worth to mention. Chopper yelling out "it's -50 degrees celsius!" is not present when Luffy
just realizes that it's quite.. cold.
When Sanji tells Chopper that Luffy's a monster (a freak in the dub, they seem to stress the word throughout the next few
or so episodes) Chopper was given thought dialogue in the dub.
Clip Edit:
The mini flashback of Hiluluk telling Chopper about his flag is cut out. This happens after hearing his voice while the
camera is focussed onto Hiluluk's jolly roger.
Right in the middle of the close up on Chopper's face (happens right after the above) the flashes of Chopper's time with
Hiluluk and a retelling of Hiluluk's death are cut out.
A commercial break after Wapol yells out to burn the flag. After the commercial break, that last scene before the commercial
continued for a brief moment, then the last Wapol scene was reused again.
Dialogue Edit:
For some reason I think this edit is for racial reasons, because in the dub, there was nothin' about shooting fro's and
calling him Afroman and the sort. In fact, if I remember right, they called the fro's "hairballs".. wait, no, in the next
dub episode the narrator called them furballs.
Interesting Note:
Mmm, they're not very sneaky when it comes to getting rid of the smoke from Sanji's cigarette. In fact, if you look at his
mouth while he speaks here.. you can see the smoke! Not as bad as the one back in the Arlong arc.
Name Change:
Kuromarimo's Eleki-Marimo (Electric Marimo) is dubbed Static Cling Attack.
Clip Edit:
Hm, alrighty. As the camera is focussed upon the flaming arrowtip, the dub extends the time a bit while in the original Chess
fires it already and catches one of the Eleki-Marimos on Sanji on fire. He then quickly digs up snow with one hand while
standing on the other. Chess continues to grin, but looks the other way to see Chopper coming his way. This entire part is
cut out. In the dub, after having the arrow stuck on the camera a bit longer, Chopper is instantly seen running towards
Chess' way.
Name Change:
Sanji's Armee de L'air (French for Air Force) Gomu Shoot (Rubber Shoot) up!" is changed to Taffy Trouncer.
Wapol's Baku Baku Shoku ("Shoku" being "Food") is changed to Munch Munch Mutation.
Dialogue Edit:
Dubbed Luffy thought it was weird but Luffy thought it was cool!!
After Chess and Kuromarimo are eaten, this time dubbed Luffy thought it was incredible, when Luffy shouted "cannibal!!"
Eek.. dubbed Wapol's factory-attempted noises. It was like "oo aa oo aa ooo--".
Clip Edit:
After the commercial break, a repeat of the steam coming out from Wapol (he's finished doing his stuff) is shown.
When Luffy and the others prepare themselves, the camera zooming in on Wapol's door, a 3/4 shot of it, and a side view of
Sanji's face are cut out.
Dialogue Edit:
Rule No. 1 in dubbed Wapol's book is "The King is always right." In the original it was "Those who disobey the King, die!"
Clip Edit:
When Luffy talks to Chopper, Chopper is somewhat distressed at what Wapol did - firing at Hiluluk's pirate mark. The
little bit with Hiluluk in his mind that occurs at this time is cut out, as well as a closer up look at Chopper that happens
after it.
Dialogue Edit:
Hiluluk tells Chopper not to hate humans, Hiriluk tells him not to be afraid of them (Chopper recalls this before he punches
Wapol).
Chopper is given thought dialogue as he hesistates his punch.
When Hiluluk turned around to face Chopper when he asked about saving the King, he did nothing but smile. In the dub, he tells
Chopper to follow his heart.
Clip Edit:
Luffy's hands tying up a pole with a piece from his jacket originally occurred before Chopper hit the ground, and this is
removed.
Dialogue Edit:
Due to the dialogue in the dub, we're almost on the assuption that Wapol is still a pirate and still wants to be one,
though he clearly stated before that it was a lie (I think?). He doesn't care much for the flag because he really isn't a
pirate, which is the real situation right now. Luffy.. yeah. Just some random thoughts. If I type about it I'm going to be
here all night. *rubs her eye*
Clip Edit:
Grr, we're nearly at the end and they decided to do their jumbling around here. After Wapol laughs, 4Kids pulled a shot from
the next episode (at the end of 88's recap, used for the title screen). It was a further away view of the smoke rising from the tower
where Luffy was standing. You still can't see him. After that they do it again by placing in a Sanji shot, following a Kureha
shot. These too are probably from the recap shown in 88. Then Luffy is seen holding the flag up.
But oh no, it's not done yet. Things go accordingly for like 3 scenes. After the close up of Hiluluk's flag (you can see the
holes in it), and before the shot that had half of Luffy's face (white background behind him) they went to 88 again and took
about three scenes. The part where Luffy asks Chopper what he wanted to do (but he didn't.. ask that at this point),
Chopper's response to him, and Wapol with his creepy evilish grin and pointing his cannon to Luffy again.
