Am I forgetting to say that Sanji has a lollipop or that Smoker's missing his cigars? It would be much too repetitive to mention these edits, as if the "this was cut" and "that was taken out" wasn't already.
According to a certain Cartoon Network interview (but remember, this is 4Kids), to be allowed to air dubbed anime, they must follow certain guidelines. Shows which are TV-14 are already toned down. One Piece isn't even a TV-14 program (it's actually TV-Y7) so it's going to get hit. It's just that nobody expected it to be that heavily edited. I'll have to look up some things about the unedited Miyazaki movies before I say anymore.
The lists for each episode are already long. If you see a digital or color edit without a screenshot, you know it's one of these below.
Green titles are edits (mostly text) mentioned in every episode they appear in unless they are crazily excessive in that episode! That's when I have to ignore them!
Red titles are never (unless noteworthy) mentioned in any of the episode comparisons.
Blue titles are mentioned a few times when they first appear but may cease to be in future episodes. For example, since Miss Doublefinger is a character that appears often in the Arabasta episodes, you'll find notes and screenshots of her usual edits when she first appears, but not in later episodes.
This page is not meant to be a complaint. Honest!
-[ Smoking is a Problem ]-
|
Cigarette to Lollipop: In the English version, his cigarette simply didn't have a red piece of candy on the end. The entire stick is edited. Sometimes you'll find some screenshots on the site, but only if it was a really "wow" moment. As you've probably already seen, it's gone and we get a nice glimpse of this lollipop of his in this picture. His lollipop has only changed shape once, but only once. That's sort of why I believe in the "more than one team to edit" thing... more about this later on. Anyhow, I recall two episodes where the smoke isn't completely erased. A particular Arlong episode was one. Well, at least he smokes in the English version of the manga...
Cigarette to Nothing?: Miss Doublefinger. The problem with this is that it looks like of funny with her fingers like that. She wants money, you can tell. Or maybe she's snapping her fingers.
Smoker's Smoke: Smoker smokes a lot, even more than Sanji does. So, unlike many predictions I've seen on Japanese sites, Smoker isn't chewing or sucking on any candy... he just doesn't have it anymore. So, what to do with all the smoke floating around him? Leave it in. Well, he ate that Devil's Fruit after all... so it's "okay" to have smoke coming from his mouth! Smoke isn't really randomly floating around, because smoke is actually added to make it look like it's from his mouth. Oh, yeah, you know those cigars he has on his jacket? Yeah, they're gone.
-[ The Ladies are Mostly Targeted ]-
|
Ladies' Edit: It started in Arabasta when a lot more "important" women show up. Miss Doublefinger, Miss Allsunday, Miss Merrychristmas, you name her. Too much skin showing? Not a problem for 4Kids. Cleavage? Erased.
Inconsistency with Robin: This is related to the above regarding the edits to many women. The first one is from episode 72 and the second is from 76. From this information, I can conclude only three possible reasons for this. One, there are different teams responsible for doing these digital edits. Two, they decided that using white is more fitting than coloring it purple, and three, they simply forgot. I believe that I only have these screenshots of Robin so far, so to reduce my conclusions I will need to keep track. I do however, have strong faith in my second guess.
Miss Merrychristmas' Purple Christmas Tree: Nothing much to talk about this one. I only know that this is to hide the "Christmas" reference so the tree is now purple. Religion...
-[ Clothings, Signs, and Other Things ]-
|
No Words Allowed: I try to mention these everytime, I really do. I won't immediately say that they're gone because of the whole "Al Khan says children don't read" thing, because that would be assuming. So, all I have to say is that any sort of lettering in the anime is just gone. There are only a few special cases where they are left in. Maybe they just forget.
Bounties: You know those wanted posters? The word Marine at the bottom corner is always erased, as well as "Dead or Alive".
Marine to Navy: The word Marine is replaced with the word Navy. I'm aware that Kaigun does means Navy, but I assume that you watch fansubs if you're here so... (also, the Wikipedia article since I know nothing about military forces and since it'd provide a better explanation than I could ever write up. No wonder my parents kept on saying that Kaigun was "Navy" and gave me a little silence whenever I asked if Kaigun could also be the same as "Marine".)
No Kanji on the Characters: Characters like Mr. 1 and Bon Kurei are constantly seen having kana somewhere on their body. Mr. 1 has the kanji meaning "one" (it's an old way of writing it) and Bon Kurei has the kana with "bon kure" on his cape. Well, Johnny managed to keep his kanji on his face (the one meaning ocean).
Sometimes Symbols: Well...
Are Tattoos Symbols?: Like Ace's tattoo on his arm. That's gone, but Whitebeard's symbol isn't.
Episode Recap: It's always going to be changed. This includes the absence of the area map (ie. Arabasta) and not using Toei's selected scenes for the recap.
To Be Continued: Right after the end of the episode, a To Be Continued appears, but it is not present in the dub.
The BGM!: None of it is retained. 4Kids have gone and made their own bgm.
-[ Are Those Puns Punny? ]-
|
Even in Dire Situations...: Puns, in every episode. Stuck in the cage about to die? I was surprised that they were still shouting puns. Not so serious anymore, is it. This doesn't mean that puns don't exist in One Piece, because they do. It's hard to translate a pun between languages and maintain their exact meanings. It's either completely changed or attempted. It's just that they're so excessive in the dub! If you're looking for a prime example of the kind of puns in the dub, check out the dubbed episode where Zoro challenges Baroque Works at Whiskey Peak. Poor Zoro had a pun every time his mouth was opened.
Oh shi-.. I mean, Oh no!: There are some foul language in One Piece, so an edit in this category is acceptable. Just don't expect to see a language edit or something on the pages.
Death: 99% of the time, the word "death" or "kill" or anything in between is not said among the characters. Less-powerful words have been chosen to be used instead.
Dialogue: Unless it really, really changes the story, this isn't noted. Much of the regular dialogue is changed, but then again, the meaning is somewhat and sometimes still there.
Trace? Chaser? Nefeltari? Tutu? ...Techniques?: I mention name changes when someone or something is introduced, but that's about it. After that introduction, they are no longer mentioned. If you're looking for something like the Pistol to Blast thing, your best bet is probably episode 1.
Could it be Juice?: Most of the time, the contents have a different color. At Loguetown, Smoker sits down to surprisingly have Power Juice. It's funny, strange, and sad, but it's true. Just recently, it has been made to look like water.
-[ No Blood may be Spilled ]-
|
Unscathed: Violence exists. It's not like Luffy and the gang can leave battles without a bit of bloodshed. Excluding the one mistake during the fight against Krieg, not one drop of blood has been spilt yet. There's those guidelines, but after watching the English Naruto...
No Bruises, You're Definitely Fine!: A character may get slapped and hit, but not even bruises are allowed to appear.
-[ Those Guns are Edited ]-
|
They Be the Navy's Favorite: It has NOT been confirmed, but people can only conclude that the Marines are using water guns. Never have they mentioned the words "super soaker" or "water gun", but it's just the appearance.
Green is Favored: This was extremely excessive during the Drum arc. It seems that green is the color that was decided after using the other colors before. Those soldiers during the Doctor Hunt had green rifles (even during a blue-tinted flashback, so they stood out) and the rebel army is following their example.
Made to be Shorter: The most redundant edit has to be the seconds that are clipped from scene changes. I dare not count the seconds taken off, so people like Dogasu and Yashouzoid, you two are just truly amazing...
Am I Sane?: I'll be sure to write about the other edits that show up on their respective pages. With these edits no longer mentioned, it saves a lot of headaches, but those pages are still fairly long...
